スティーブン・キング氏の"On Writing"を読みました。
前半は、スティーブンキング氏が教師と洗濯屋の仕事をしながら小説家として大成するまでの自伝です。
後半は、小説を書くための具体的なアドバイスです。
以下は私自分用の読書メモです。
・書くことに上達したかったら、多く読み、多く書くことが重要。
・スティーブン・キング氏は常に本を持ち歩き、すこしの暇ができれば本を読んでいる。
・物を書くときは、部屋のドアをしめ、外の世界をシャットダウンして書く。
・毎日、同じ時間に、同じ場所で書く。
・毎日書く量のゴールを決める。スティーブン・キングは1000字を推奨。日本語では約400文字程度か。
・一次ドラフトは一気に書く。一冊の本の一次ドラフトは三ヵ月程度で書く。細かいミスは気にしない。
・ドラフトを書いたら一定期間、原稿を机の引き出しに入れておく。一か月以上経って原稿を取り出す。

Your job isn’t to find these ideas but to recognize them when they show up.

You have to read widely, constantly refining (and redefining) your own work as you do so. It is hard for me to believe that people who read very little (no not at all in some cases) should presume to write and expect people to like what they have written, but I know it’s true.
Reading is the creative center of a writer’s life. I take a book with me everywhere I go, and find there are all sorts of opportunities to dip in.

Talent renders the whole idea of rehearsal meaningless; when you find something at which you are talented, you do it (whatever it is) until your fingers bleed or your eyes are ready to fall out of your head. Even when no one is listening ( or reading, or watching), every outing is a bravura performance, because you as the creator are happy.
The real importance of reading is that it creates an ease and intimacy with the process of writing; one comes to the country of the writer with one’s papers and identification pretty much in order. Constant reading will pull you into a place ( a mind-set, if you like the phrase) where you can write eagerly and without self-consciousness.

The closed door is your way of telling the world and yourself that you mean business; you have made a serious commitment to write and intend to walk the walk as well as talk the talk.
By the time you step into your new writing space and close the door, you should have settled on a daily writing goal. As with physical exercise, it would be best to set this goal low at first, to avoid discouragement. I suggest a thousand words a day, and because I’m feeling magnanimous, I’ll also suggest that you can take one day a week off, at least to begin with. No more; you’ll lose the urgency and immediacy of your story if you do.
