今回のお題はこちら。

Q：The pros and cons of TV license fees
（放送受信料のメリット・デメリットとは？）

NHKは放送受信料を視聴者から受け取って収益を得ています。

一方、民放テレビ局は視聴者からはお金をとらず、番組の間にコマーシャルを放送することで、スポンサー企業から広告料を受け取っています。

どちらのありかたにもメリット、デメリットがあります。

今回は、放送受信料のメリット・デメリットを、テレビ局側と視聴者側両方の視点から考えてみました。


If I am asked the pros and cons of TV license fees. I can come up with some examples of pros and cons from the view points of TV stations as well a TV viewers.

Firstly, let me show you the pros and cons of TV license fees from a TV station’s point of view. One of the pros is that TV station can gain the stable income from the TV license fees. So they can avoid commercialism. I mean, they do not need to make TV shows with sex and violence to get the higher viewer rate. They can focus on making high quality TV programs.

On the other hand, one of the cons of TV license fees from the TV station’s point of view is that they may not feel the pressure from viewers because TV station can get license fees anyway whether or not viewers are satisfied with the TV programs which they make. Thus, the quality of the TV program may decline.

Now, I would like to talk about pros and cons of TV license fees from TV viewers point of view. As one of pros of TV license fees for TV viewers, TV programs are not interrupted with commercials.

On the other hand, one of the cons is that viewers have to pay the fixed rate of TV license fees no matter how many hours they watch TV or no matter how they are satisfied with the TV shows.

These are the examples of pros and cons of TV license fees that I can come up with right now. I hope that NHK make TV programs that are worth paying TV license fees. Thank you for your attention.
