英検1級二次試験スピーチサンプル3「植物や動物の絶滅は避けられない？」

「英検1級二次試験に一発合格したMBAホルダーが公開するスピーチサンプルシリーズ」です。
今回のお題はこれです。

"Is the extinction of some plant and animal species inevitable?"
(植物や動物の絶滅は避けられない？)

この手の質問に対して「絶滅は避けられません」というシニカルな回答をするのはリスクが高いです。

あなたがよほどこの分野に詳しくない限りは、「絶滅は避けられる。そのためには…」という回答の方が良いでしょう。

では、絶滅は避けられると主張するための根拠を考えて見ましょう。

まず、人間による乱獲で動物が絶滅することがありますが、これは捕獲量をコントロールすることで回避できそうです。

あと、直接人間が殺さなくても、人間が自然環境を破壊して、種を絶滅に追いやることもあります。これは自然環境を保護することで回避可能です。

この2点を根拠にしたスピーチを考えてみましょう。

In this speech, I would like to focus on the extinction due to the activities of human being. OK? I believe that the extinction of some plant and animal species is NOT inevitable. It can be avoided. I have several reasons why I think so.

First, we can control the amount of plants and animals we kill. So far, many kind of species of plant and animals are disappeared since they were killed by human being. However, now we know that it is very stupid to kill too much and lost them. If we recognize that a certain plant or animal is verge of extinction, we are able to stop taking them or take less.

Second, some plant and animal species are disappeared due to environment pollution caused by human being. We can stop this type of extinction by keep natural environment clean. So far, we have broken the environment in order to build factories, roads, buildings and so forth. But, now we in the developed countries recognized the importance of natural environment. We should be smart enough to understand that environment is much more important than convenient life.

From these reasons, I concluded that the extinction of some plant and animal species is NOT inevitable.

このスピーチのあとの質疑応答では、「自然が大事とわかっていても、乱獲や自然破壊をやめられていないではないか？」などのツッコミがあるでしょう。

それに対しては、「残念ながらそういうケースはこれまでありました。」と認めた上で、だからこそ我々は便利さや快適さを諦めて自然を守る覚悟が必要です。」などと返しましょう。

この程度の受け答えができれば、英検1級二次試験は合格できるはずです。
